We’re not here to tell you to drink or not drink alcohol. We just want to give you some knowledge, because knowledge is power. #win
Alcohol companies have totally capitalized on our diet culture and fear of carbs. (Have you noticed how many “low carb” options there are now?)
And when you choose a “low carb” drink, you’re probably thinking: “Yeay! A low-carb option! I’m winning!”
Well…, maybe not.
Because here’s what the companies don’t tell you (shhh….!):
Alcohol doesn’t magically disappear from our bodies. We actually metabolize it (aka use it for energy).
And here’s the kicker: Alcohol is its own separate macronutrient.
What?!? Yep. It actually clocks in at 7 calories per gram! That’s almost as much as fat (9cals/g), and almost twice the amount as carbs (4cals/g). #mindblown
AND, because alcohol is toxic to our bodies (whomp, whomp), we’ll use its energy first to remove it as quickly as possible.
Which then may cause the calories in the foods we eat to be more likely stored as body fat.
Double whomp, whomp.
This is in addition to all the other ways alcohol can negatively affect our bodies, like:
Dehydration followed by water retention
Histamine reaction
Decrease in sleep quality
Etc, etc
So think before you drink, and remember that alcohol is alcohol; it’s not a carbohydrate.
