Hi, All! It’s Sue here. So I’m not really a fan of New Year’s resolutions. We’re now in the 3rd week of the new year, and by now, most resolutions have been abandoned and/or forgotten. Are you still going strong, or are you one of the 80% of people who don’t achieve their resolutions?
Does this meme apply to you? It most certainly has applied to me in past years.
Most resolutions don’t make it past the 6-week mark. So why do we even bother?
Is it because we’re coming off the holidays where eating and drinking are in abundance and all the overindulging has taken its toll? My guess is yes, because the top resolutions all involve weight loss/diet and exercise; they have for me at least.
So why do 80% of us fail? Maybe it’s because our goals are too broad, too extreme, too instantaneous….??
Here’s my personal history with resolutions; I’ve said all of these in the past:
And so here’s what happened to me in past years when I was in “resolution mode:”
Working Out:
I’d go in, and everyone’s doing their own thing. No one really cares if I’m there or not; there’s very little interaction between all the people there.
So I think, “I’ll get on the treadmill!” Nope, there’s a signup board with a looooong wait list.
“Ok, then I’ll go lift some weights instead!” Hmmmm….what to do around all the big guys in the weight room chatting it up with their buddies while they do their sets….maybe some dumbbells? A few bicep curls and shoulder presses, and I’m outta there.
“Maybe I’ll drop in on an exercise class.” Ha! Except I’m superiorly uncoordinated, know none of the steps, and feel like Lucille Ball in this quick video:

Although I did maintain my workouts at the traditional gym until we moved out to the country, I never really enjoyed it as much as I do with my wonderful CrossFit community.
Diet:
As for my diet resolutions…..ohhhh, such epic failures. I’ve tried the fad diets. Multiple times. From Weight Watchers to Atkins to intermittent fasting to everything else in-between.
Sometimes I felt like I was dying of starvation and cheated the very first weekend, other times I made it a bit longer, but my diet attempts always ended relatively quickly. I finally, finally realized that the key to my success wasn’t in making broad, sweeping resolutions. Rather, it’s making small, sustainable changes over time that has been helping me achieve my goals over the long-term. It’s definitely not a path that’s straight-and-narrow (I’ve admittedly derailed several times), but I’m making progress every day.
After all, isn’t that the point??
